For over twenty years I’ve been making the Branta Maximas Short Reed call, one at a time. Over all these years, the call has proven itself to be the most durable, realistic and easiest to learn short-reed conceived. We speak to geese, and they speak back.
Barrel: FDA/USDA white Delrin barrels- a very tough material with excellent sound quality. I turn the lanyard and o-ring slots on a machinist-style lathe, true-bore and lightly chamfer the bell end.
Mouthpiece: The mouthpiece is FDA Nylon and the barrel meets the mouthpiece with a very tight o-ring seal, lubricated with food grade FDA/USDA Lubri-film®. Same as in your keg tap. I chamfer and polish the mouthpiece end.
Toneboard and Reed: The toneboard is a replica of my original-design board from 1999 - the goosiest one out of a hundred I made and experimented with. The reed shape is perfected using a thin mylar enabling light breath force, and implementing a special tuning technique which creates “graduated rigidity” like that of a thicker shaved reed.
Appearance and Design: The aluminum band is the exact same type and material, and sourced from the same U.S. supplier used in legitimate waterfowl banding. These are swan-size bands wrapping the barrel. The blue neck band graphic is a waterproof sticker.
To bring you the best call, I still make each and every one by hand and tune it. These are not cranked out in an injection mold and assembled by warehouse-people using markings for reed tune like the one hanging on the rack at XYZ Sporting Goods store.
Branta Maximas MX-1 Short Reed Call $45.00 - Comes with instructions and mp3 instructional sound file - EVERYTHING SHIPS PRIORITY MAIL
My toneboards and reeds are still 100% original and my own design, borrowing no parts or pieces from large call companies. Ask many of the big boys if they can make that claim. They cannot. Yes, even the guts in most of the $250 competition "customs" come from P.S. Olt or Knight and Hale and they shave their reeds, change the location, or use a different thickness reed material. Aside from differing call lengths or materials, you’re being sold essentially the same musical parts every time.
I wish you a truly great goose season, and I hope a Branta call can be a part of helping you enjoy it!
